March 1, 2019 - Valentine’s Day is past, but Saint Patrick’s Day is coming!  This is how Cathy Adams, program director at Nueva Vista Morgan Hill, defines each month at the facility – by promoting well-loved calendar holidays for the enjoyment of residents, and creating additional events and outings to round out the month..

“In February our group made some beautiful Valentines, and we decorated cookies in our Community Connections group for a Valentine’s Dance,” said Adams.  “I enlisted residents who like to decorate, and took them shopping so that they could drive the décor.  We had tablecloths and table scatter, and made fun centerpieces for all of the tables.  We decorated the dining room, and at the dance we had glow-in-the-dark balloons that were very cool.”

Adams said that during baking, she encouraged everyone to decorate one cookie for themselves and set it aside.

“We pulled everyone in for a cookie toast at the end. There was lots of frosting! But if you can’t have fun baking cookies, when can you?”

Adams related that she tries to schedule several types of outings every month – easy ones, like going for hot chocolate, ice cream or tacos, as well as something physical – bowling or miniature golf.  She also tries to schedule a major outing, such as a trip to the Monterrey Bay Aquarium, or the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose. Considered one of the premier museums of science and technology in the United States, “The Tech” offers much to see and do, from a biofeedback machine to an earthquake simulator, and a screen where you can stand in front and see all of your bones. Clients can also build small robots.

“Saint Patrick’s Day is the next event on our calendar,” says Adams.  “We’ll be holding a day-time dance, games and maybe a scavenger hunt.  We try to keep it interesting here!”
