Happy Healthy Holidays

Happy Holidays

As the holidays arrive, taking us from holiday office parties to holiday get-togethers of family and friends, I want to remind you that eating healthier and happier during this time of year is entirely doable. Just a little planning and preparation goes a long way. This post is a follow up to my previous post (How to avoid holiday weight gain). Here are 4 ways you can enjoy the holiday spirit without having to completely ditch your healthy eating efforts.

1.   Cocktails
Signature holiday punches and mixed drinks have a lot more sugar than most cocktails. Wine or beer is a better choice. When we drink wine or beer we are able to quantify the number of  alcohol units we are having. If having a holiday cocktail is tempting, then stop after one drink. Stopping yourself after one drink can also stop you from getting too much into the party spirit and overeating.

2.   Water
Remember to stay hydrated.  Many of us cannot distinguish between feeling hungry and feeling  thirsty, which unfortunately leads many of us to overeat. To avoid this, drink water throughout the day, aim to drink at least 2 liters of water a day. During mealtimes choose water over juice and sodas – which as we know contain excess and unnecessary sugar.

3.   Make sure your plate is colorful
Ensuring that your plate is colorful means that you will be choosing vegetables and fruit. Choosing fresh salads or roasted and steamed vegetable side dishes lower calories, while filling our plates and our tummies with essential nutrients and fiber. This will help you feel fuller longer so you can avoid the temptation to overeat other high calorie foods.

4.   Enjoy holiday treats in moderation
Fried foods are the traditional foods enjoyed during Hanukkah.  Grandma’s fudge is a family tradition and your co-workers cake at the Christmas office party is calling your name! This bounty is impossible to ignore and you do not have to suffer being the only one not enjoying these sweet treats. My message is simple – indulge, just a little. We are all well aware that the problem we face is over-eating . My advice is to enjoy, but in moderation – plate one portion and eat it slowly, savoring and appreciating each mouthful.

Happy holidays!
