Helping counter Covid: Psynergy recruits HR Specialist Melissa Moog
HR Specialist Melissa Moog has joined Psynergy Programs to assist in recruiting and a number of other key HR functions, including on-boarding and off-boarding, benefit management, training and employee relations. Moog ‘s experience totals 14 years to date with an emphasis in recruiting plus a Master’s degree in Human Resources. She also has a background in mental health, having previously worked for Turning Point Community Programs in Rancho Cordova, as a resource and first-level contact for 200 employees at 10 facilities.
“We feel very lucky to have found Melissa,” says Founding Partner Jean Edwards. “She understands our business and its challenges, and our employees just love her.”
Moog was hands-on with Covid response in her previous position, hammering out new pandemic policies and communicating them while handling hundreds of calls from employees navigating benefit and leave options in the early days of the pandemic. She also became an expert on benefits after several of her colleagues there resigned.
Moog says that the mental health field appeals to her because of her experience with family members who have had mental health needs.
“I am basically drawn to the mission of Psynergy,” says Moog. “Knowing that I am able to serve the employee population with their concerns, and also respond to the managers is very rewarding. Those are my two main customers, and HR should be supportive of both.”
Moog says that the biggest challenge for HR professionals is keeping a level head and balancing between following company policy while addressing employee needs.
Training is also a big area of responsibility for Moog, who spends about three hours with each new residential caregiver on their first day, providing guidance during on-boarding to new hires in their first 90 days. Each new employee must successfully navigate 40 hours of online training dealing with mental health, clinical and safety topics during that interval.
“If a residential caregiver is trained well they can handle difficult situations,” says Moog. “They can de-escalate a stressful situation and quickly assess client needs to get them the care that is needed.”
Moog takes her career in HR very seriously, especially in the time of Covid.
“In the midst of this pandemic HR is pivotal in a company’s direction,” she says. “We are at an all-time high for anxiety in the employee population. HR is positioned to help the company quickly implement protocols to protect people from the virus, enforce protocols, provide notifications and make sure questions are answered. A key part of that mission is making sure that personal and professional boundaries are clear in order to keep everyone as safe as possible.”
When not at work Moog enjoys being a mom to a teenage daughter and boy/girl twins who keep her very active. She enjoys traveling to the coast where she can feel the sunshine on her face while dipping her toes in the water.
