Walking Together to Help Prevent Suicide

Out of the Darkness walk

Six residents from Psynergy Programs participated in the Out of the Darkness Campus Walk for Suicide Prevention at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento. This annual fundraiser provides an opportunity for the community to acknowledge how suicide and mental health conditions affect our lives and the lives of those we love.

The event requires no registration fee to participate, but individuals who opt in to meet a $150. fund-raising goal to help support  the work to stop suicide receive the official walk t-shirt.  The walk itself is no more than 1.5 miles, in and around Sutter Health Park’s baseball stadium.

“This was a wonderful way for residents to get involved on a Saturday,” says Danitta Means, Program Manager at Vista de Robles in Rancho Cordova. “We arrived around 10:00 and the walk started at 10:30.  After the walk there were opportunities to listen to speakers, play games and take selfies. It was good for those affected by suicide ideation to hear from others who have experienced similar situations.”

Put on by the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention of Greater Sacramento, the event also featured a Mental Health Resource Fair with informational booths, free handouts and the opportunity to learn about mental health.
